My rating: 5 of 5 stars
After reading the first book in the Dawnland series I was anxious to read the second one and see where the story went.
In Hella Kills we catch up with the crew after they had narrowly escaped the military attack where they lost some of their own and were split up from other members of their group.
Hella and Huck are a great couple and I rooted for them in the first book, but throughout the second book, I think I became just as confused as Hella.
There was quite a bit of depth and development added to the characters in this book. The characters are believable and easy to relate to.
Hella gets right into the fighting in this book learning how to be an effective zombie killer without her virus. She has also learned that her bite can turn others into zombies and that they could be immune to her killer virus.
Hella and her crew must re-unite with the others, save her friend from the sadistic military crew all the while keeping her secret safe from them so that they won’t capture her and start experimenting on her.
Along they way they meet other friends, foes and of course, zombies. There is betrayal, romance and survival. I will say I was quite shocked at the twist that Hella’s love life takes in the second installment. I figured Huck would be the one, but now I am not so sure, and I am not even sure who I am rooting for anymore.
The plot is nicely thought out and delivered well. The details are quite descriptive and helps to paint a nice picture in my head while reading. The development of the story is delivered at an even pace, enough to keep you hooked.
This series has a unique concept when it comes to Hella’s virus and her ability to kill zombies. It is quite refreshing to read something that has a different edge than your standard zombie apocalypse.
Can’t wait for the next one!
