Review of ‘Eating Bull’ by Carrie Rubin

Eating BullEating Bull by Carrie Rubin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

At first glance and because of the book cover and title, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this book. I must say, Rubin captured my attention from the very beginning and kept it until the end. This book appealed to me as a nurse and a medical thriller lover. Eating Bull is well written and easily understandable to those that aren’t in the medical profession. As a reader, it was thoroughly intriguing and kept me turning the page.

This book also appealed to me as a nurse because I do work with this population and the stigma and the hardships that they face are real. The challenges at home, if they even have a home or a family is in itself enough without having to worry about eating healthy and getting enough exercise. It’s much easier to escape into junk food, tv and video games.

We follow Jeremy as a young, obese teenage boy as he struggles to eat better and lose weight. We get some insight into the internal struggle that explains what Jeremy goes through and many other obese teenagers out there. We glean some understanding of how eating is used as a coping mechanism for bullying, depression and a less than ideal home life.

The characters were quite realistic with a lot of depth to their unique characteristics. The relationships formed realistically and we were able to see these characters grow and develop throughout the story.

The plot had a steady pace and things really take an interesting twist when we meet the serial killer and get to see inside his psychotic head. This was a well paced medical thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. The end, well, I won’t give it away, but what a fantastic twist that I didn’t see coming at all!

Great job Rubin! I look forward to reading more of our work.
