Broken Promises: A Matt Davis Mystery by Joe Perrone Jr.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is the first book of the ‘Matt Davis Mysteries’ that I have read. I must say this was a fun and engaging read. I really loved the authors humor that is portrayed throughout the novel especially by the main character, Matt.
I found this to be an easy to read, thought provoking, mystery novel. It is quite comical at times, but serious when it needs to be. Once I started it, I did not want to put it down. I wanted to know what happened and to see how everything would come together for Matt to solve the crime.
In such a small town, murder is a big deal. It is even more difficult when it is an 88 year old woman with no enemies and no clues as to who would want to murder her. It is up to Matt and his crew to find the killer.
As we follow Matt throughout this novel, we learn about Maggie and what she really wanted out of life, not the arranged marriage that she ended up in. This news came as a shock to all, but reading more of her diaries and learning about her ‘beloved’ and his plans to help rob a payroll truck sets Matt on the path to find her killer.
This story sure has its fill of twists and turns and just when you think, ah ha, I have figured it out…something new pops up that discounts your theory. I really enjoyed that the author incorporated some really good detective work into this novel. Matt had to dig through diaries, scrap books and old, dusty records. It wasn’t all about the digital age and this was quite interesting to me.
The character interaction and development is profound. The relationships presented in this book are believable and well crafted. I enjoyed learning about other things going around in the town, rather than have the entire book consumed by this murder and solving it.
Well done Perrone and I am looking forward to reading more in the ‘Matt Davis Mysteries’.
